Metabolics – Children’s Formula Multivitamin and Mineral
We all want the best for our children and that includes the best, highest quality, bioavailable nutrients.
Micronutrients in the soil decrease as farmland becomes over farmed and minerals are leached off due to heavy rain and flooding. Continual use of herbicides and pesticides destroy worms and bacteria in the soil that enable plants to absorb minerals depleting our fruit and vegetables.
Animals are often reared indoors resulting in our meat and eggs with less than optimal Omega 3 oils.
Processed foods reduce natural nutrient content such as magnesium and B vitamins which are lost in the production of white flour and more and more foods contain traces of herbicides, pesticides and GM ingredients.
Cooking foods can result in nutrient loss of 5-15%, sodium, potassium and magnesium may be leached out of food when cooked in water. Freezing alters the cellular structure of food and fruit is often picked green or unripe to be transported over long distances and artificially ripened with gas. Ethylene gas is used to ripen bananas, citrus fruits, tomatoes, pineapples, melons, mangos, apples, pears and avocados
Vitamin D deficiency is now considered pandemic. Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin from sunlight and helps absorb calcium in the body. Serous vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets which is now seeing a recurrence. Babies in the uterus need vitamin D and more vitamin D deficient babies are being born to Vitamin D deficient mothers or mothers that smoke as smoking interferes with the absorption of some nutrients, especially Vitamin C and D. Children in general are outdoors less in modern day living choosing to play electronic games and watch television indoors rather than play outside. Even when outside and the sun shines, advice is to use sunblock or sun protection creams, preventing the skin from manufacturing Vitamin D naturally.
Stress utilises more micronutrients and children, particularly teenagers are under more stress than ever with studies and exam situations.
More and more children are developing allergies, which may increase nutrient requirement or decrease absorption of nutrients in the gut and children that are “picky eaters”, vegetarian or vegan are wise to supplement with micronutrients including Vitamin B12 that is not found in plant cells and needed for making red blood cells.
Extra requirements occur during periods of rapid growth and development. Often children are hungrier during these times and consume greater amounts of sugar and high calorie fatty foods that offer little nutritionally.
Vitamins and minerals are essential to support growth and development, support the immune system, support hormone and brain chemical production. The growing body needs large amounts of some minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium for normal growth and development, including bones and teeth and small amounts of trace minerals and vitamins every day.
